The Sampson County NC Detention Center is a medium-security detention center located at 112 Fontana St Clinton, NC which is operated locally by the Sampson County Sheriff's Office and holds inmates awaiting trial or sentencing or both. Most of the sentenced inmates are here for less than two years. Sampson County accepts inmates from surrounding towns, municipalities, the US Marshal's Service and the Clinton Police Department who do not have their own long-term lock-up.
The Detention Center is a state-of-the-art, 252 bed facility (expandable to 300 beds) which consist of six housing pods; a direct supervision maximum/minimum female pod comprised of 38-beds; a 38-bed direct supervision medium-security pod for male inmates; a 38-bed indirect supervision maximum security pod for male inmates; a 38-bed indirect supervision maximum security special population pod; a 60-bed indirect/direct supervision medium-security male pod; and a 40-bed direct supervision minimum-security male dormitory. The kitchen and laundry areas which serve the budgeted bed space were built to accommodate future expansions as well. The facility is also equipped with video visitation, Magistrates Office, a secure entrance for law enforcement to enter with prisoners, an intake area for processing prisoners and an attorney visitation area. The picture above shows the central control area which functions as the nerve center of the facility, controlling inmate movement throughout the entire complex. Radio, fire medical and security alarms are monitored from this master control area also.
The Detention Services Division is responsible for the intake and control of all inmates housed in the Sampson County Detention Center. Their duties include the following:
- Processing of arrestees, which includes fingerprinting and photographing
- Security searches
- Service of warrants on inmates
- General supervision of inmates
- Tracking of all inmates court cases
- Transportation of inmates to other facilities
- Performing DNA testing for court system
Low risk inmates, often referred to as trustees, are used to perform many services in the County at no cost to taxpayers. These services include:
- Providing janitorial services for the Sheriffs Office and Detention Center
- Providing general labor to various county departments
There are many services provided for Inmates through the jail. All of the services are either paid for by the inmates or through grant programs available. These Services include:
- Canteen Services (paid for by inmates)
- Work Release Program (inmates must pay a room and board fee)
- Life Skills School (paid for through grant monies)
- GED Classes (paid for through grant monies)
- Adult Skills Classes (paid for through grant monies)
