NYSDOC – Sing Sing Correctional Facility basic information to help guide you through what you can do for your inmate while they are incarcerated. The facility's direct contact number: 914-941-0108
This facility is for adult inmates.
The inmates housed at Sing Sing Correctional Facility located at 354 Hunter St in Ossining, NY are placed according to their custody level (determined by a number of factors including the past criminal history and the length of their sentence). There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released. The mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the state's recidivism rate.
Sing Sing Correctional Facility is a maximum security prison operated by the New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision in the village of Ossining, in the U.S. state of New York. It is located about 30 miles north of New York City on the east bank of the Hudson River.
In 1970, the name was changed to the "Ossining Correctional Facility," but it reverted to its original name in 1985. "Sing Sing" was derived from the name of a Native American tribe, "Sinck Sinck" (or "Sint Sinck"), from whom the land was purchased in 1685.
Sing Sing prison confines about 1,700 prisoners. There are plans to convert the original 1825 cell block into a time-specific museum. The prison property is bisected by the Metro-North Railroad's four-track Hudson Line.
Mental health treatment is offered to inmates in an Intermediate Car Program for inmates with acute to medium mental illness, a Transitional Intermediate Care Program, and Residential Crisis Treatment Program which is reserved for inmates with serious mental health issues. Sing Sing Correctional Facility offers a wide array of educational opportunities, from adult basic education and GED courses to college programs offered through several colleges that offer from an Associate's degree to a Masters Program. Furthermore, inmates can take vocational studies in carpentry, computers, electrical, plumbing/heating, small engine repair, custodial maintenance, and welding. Alternatives to violence courses, substance abuse treatment and transitional services are also available to inmates.
