KY DOC – Kentucky State Penitentiary (KSP) basic information to help guide you through what you can do for your inmate while they are incarcerated. The facility's direct contact number: 270-388-2211
This facility is for adult inmates.
The inmates housed at KY State Penitentiary located at 266 Water St in Eddyville, KY are placed according to their custody level (determined by a number of factors including the past criminal history and the length of their sentence). There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released. The mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the state's recidivism rate.
Kentucky State Penitentiary is the only maximum-security prison in the state and can house 856 adult male inmates. This facility is also responsible for housing all (male) death row inmates in the state. Inmates here can participate in many programs that treat underlying conditions of the inmate's incarceration. These programs include sex offender treatment, substance abuse treatment, moral recognition therapy, and individual counseling. KSP also offers work programs that give the inmate employment in several correctional industries including a garment factory, a bag plant, landscaping, janitorial/maintenance, and food preparation services. Inmates can also take academic courses to earn an adult basic education and GED as well as learn to read.
