The inmates housed at SCI Mahanoy located at 301 Morea Rd in Frackville, PA are placed according to their custody level (determined by a number of factors including the past criminal history and the length of their sentence). There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released. The mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the state's recidivism rate.
SCI Mahanoy is a medium-security state prison that houses about 2,490 adult male inmates comprised of 35 buildings, eleven of which are housing units for offenders. Some of the inmate housing units are multi-occupancy cells, others are dormitory-style. Inmates at this prison can work in the correctional industries program in a distribution center for commissary items. These items are distributed to prisons in the eastern part of the state. Additional work for inmate's at Mahanoy includes a road crew that picks up garbage along the interstate.
Inmates here can participate in apprenticeship programs which teach the offender a new marketable skill. Apprenticeship courses include painting, plumbing, refrigeration, electrical wiring, masonry, culinary, shoe repair, and carpentry. Vocational training in automotive technologies, computer-assisted drafting, and warehouse operation is also offered to inmates. SCI Mahanoy has a variety of programming designed to rehabilitate offenders including alcohol and substance abuse treatment, sex offender treatment, .violence prevention, mental health treatment, parenting courses, and re-entry preparation.
The SCI Mahanoy is built on a 222-acre tract of land for the expressed purpose of building a 1,000-bed medium security institution of prototypical design. The property was purchased by the Schuylkill County Redevelopment Authority through a unique lease/purchase agreement, the institution was owned and leased by Schuylkill County to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for the exclusive use of the Department of Corrections.

*Academic Programs include: Adult Basic Education, General Equivalency Diploma (GED) Preparation, Adult Literacy, English as a Second Language, Pro Literacy America, Life Skills, Applied Mathematics, Reading to Your Children, Advanced Life Skills, and Act 143.
*Vocational Education Programs are available: Auto Technology, Business Education, Computer-Assisted Drafting, Electronics, Warehouse Operation and Specialized Carpentry. Each of the above vocational programs offer certifications that are industry recognized and can assist inmates with employment upon societal reentry. In addition, SCI Mahanoy offers a 12-Chair Barber School.

The Library provides collections of materials, which meet the recreational, educational, and legal reference needs of the inmates. Inmates also have access to Inter-Library Loans.

Correctional Industries: Correctional Industries at SCI Mahanoy is a regional commissary distribution center serving nine institutions in the eastern part of Pennsylvania. We supply a variety of items for the inmate population to purchase. They include food, health and beauty, clothing, footwear, and electronic items. SCI Mahanoy CI currently employs 90 inmates on one shift.

Maximum Number of Visitors Per Inmate – 5 (including children)
Virtual visitation: Virtual visitation is available at SCI Mahanoy and is limited to persons living in the Erie, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh areas. The program uses video conferencing technology to enhance parenting skills; allows an inmate to visit with immediate family members, caregivers of the inmate’s children, and other individuals on the inmate’s approved visiting list; increases the frequency of visits for an inmate; and permits the scheduling of visits at times that are best for the visitors. Every inmate in general population status, regardless of his custody level, is eligible. Inmates housed in administrative and disciplinary custody are not permitted to participate in the Virtual Visitation Program.
