The inmates housed at Caldwell CI located at 480 Pleasant Hill Rd in Lenoir, NC are placed according to their custody level (determined by a number of factors including the past criminal history and the length of their sentence). There are ample educational and vocational training programs for all inmates, especially ones that show a willingness to learn new things that will prepare them for a better life when they are released. The mission is to promote and prepare the offender to leave in better shape than when they arrived, giving them the best chance to never come back and thus lower the state's recidivism rate.

Caldwell Correctional Center is located in Lenoir North Carolina, part of Caldwell County. It is a minimum security prison that houses 284 adult males, a modular unit was installed at the prison that added space for another 46 inmates. The prison has a 40-bed single cell segregation building for housing misdemeanants with serious felony charges pending and inmates in disciplinary segregation. Offenders are housed in one of three dormitories. Inmates at Caldwell Correctional Center can take educational classes to obtain a GED and adult basic education. Additionally, inmates can receive vocational training and receive substance abuse treatment while they serve their sentence. Fatherhood and parenting programs are also available. Offenders at Caldwell Correctional Center may participate in a variety of work assignments including working on road crews, in facility maintenance, custodial work, landscaping and within the prison's kitchen. Counseling and bible studies are made available through the Chaplains office.

Caldwell was one of 61 field unit prisons renovated or built during the late 1930s to house inmates who worked building road. Caldwell housed medium custody adult males in 1966 for one year and from 1977 to 1981, the prison housed minimum custody male youth.

In February 1994, the former Department of Correction signed its first agreement for housing state prisoners in county jail with Burke County. From 1994 to 1998, the department leased space in out-of-state prisons and other county jails as new prisons were constructed. All out-of-state prisoners were returned by December 1997 and other lease agreements were canceled as new prisons opened. The lease agreement with Burke continued until June 1998. Caldwell prison managers worked with Burke county officials who provided space for 88 state prisoners.

To improve an inmate's transition back into the community and increase their likelihood of living a crime-free life upon release, special considerations are always being made to address their criminality.

Visitation for inmates housed in Regular Population is permitted Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 3 pm. (2 hours) and 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. (2 hours) for a total of four (4) visiting periods per week.

A total of three (3) approved visitors will be permitted to visit an inmate at a designated day and visiting period each weekend.

Inmates are assigned to visiting period groups by the first letter of their last name. The four (4) visiting period group assignments are A through D, E through L, M through R, and S through Z. Some visiting periods may be more advantageous than others for visitors. In order to permit all visitors an equal opportunity to visit, each visiting period group assignment will be rescheduled on a monthly basis. When a Saturday visiting period should occur on the last day of the month and the Sunday visiting period is on the first day of the next month, both periods will be as scheduled for that month. Example: July 31 is the last day of the month and August 1 is the first day of the month. In that case, both visiting periods will occur as scheduled for July. No visiting privileges will be permitted on state-recognized holidays. Special visits must be approved in advance by the Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent or the Programs Director.

Directions – From Lenoir, take U.S. 321 south to Mt. Hermon Road. Turn right on Mt. Hermon Road and go to the next stoplight, turn right onto 321A. Go two blocks, then turn left onto Pleasant Hill Road. The unit is about one mile down the road on the right.
